A Rainy Day in Hastings - A Fishing Tale

The second part of our visit to Hastings found us by the fishing boats on the sea front.  Hastings may be famous for the Battle of Hastings and all that, but it also has a strong fishing heritage which has always been vital to the local economy.

Tourists are encouraged to visit the historic Stade area to learn more about the history and culture of fishing.  There's the Fishermen's Museum and the Shipwreck Museum to visit for starters.  The dark wooden fishermen's net shops are well worth seeing - due to limited space, they were built tall and thin!

If you like fresh seafood such as whelks and jellied eels, you won't be disappointed here!

  1. I've never been to Hastings but it looks fascinating. I love the tall thin buildings and the railway - is that a funicular? Definitely looks worth a visit. Enjoy the weekend. x

    1. Yes, there's more to Hastings than meets the eye and definitely worth a visit (there's things I didn't even mention like the antique shops, the caves and the castle!)

  2. I've never been to Hastings so thank you for taking us along. I like the tall buildings with the stained black wood. Is this architecture common in the area?

    1. Yes, as far as I believe, the net shops (as they are called) are unique to Hastings - all to do with a lot of nets to store and not a very big beach so storage space went upwards

  3. It has been many, many years since I have visited this place and as soon as I saw the smoke houses it all came back to me! I used to love visiting here. Thanks for the re-lighting the memories xx
